IVWV exam practice
The IVWV exam tests the role of responsibility: drawing up and assessing switching programmes (schakelbrieven), work permits, designating staff and weighing up risks, on top of the knowledge of a skilled person (vakbekwaam persoon, VP). It consists of a theory exam and a practical exam with the switching programme. On SwitchSkills you practise both. The official exam is in Dutch, so it helps to know the Dutch terms.

IVWV exam levels
As a person in control of the electrical installation (installatieverantwoordelijke, IV) or person in control of the work activity (werkverantwoordelijke, WV), you are responsible for an installation or for how the work is carried out. The levels are IVWV**, IVWV*** and IVWV****.
- IVWV**: Low voltage. Responsible for low-voltage installations and work
- IVWV***: Low voltage and high-voltage end groups. Including high-voltage end groups, such as transformer panels
- IVWV****: High and low voltage. Full high and low voltage, including networks and ring mains
Theory and practice
| Part | Content |
|---|---|
| Theory exam | Roles, responsibilities, risk analysis and legislation |
| Practical exam | Drawing up and carrying out a switching programme on a training rig |
| Switching programme form | Uniform Schakelbericht model Béta (STIPEL switching form), mandatory since 1 July 2026 |
The IVWV theory exam has no fixed number of questions; the pass mark is 70%.
What makes IVWV questions tricky?
With many IVWV questions, more than one answer seems plausible. You have to distinguish between what is technically possible, what looks practical and what is the safest and most responsible answer. That takes calm, careful reading and a good knowledge of the roles.
- Roles and responsibilities: who makes which decision
- Switching and releasing: preparation, communication, confirmation and order
- Dead working: the logic of making equipment safe
- Risks and deviations: safety comes before speed
- Real-world scenarios that combine several topics
Practise smart, not just a lot
- Practise by topic first, so you can see where you make mistakes repeatedly
- Use the explanation for every answer: that is where the real gains are
- Repeat questions you got wrong to train the reasoning, not to memorise the answer
- Watch for signal words such as first, safest, responsible and most appropriate
- Finish with mixed sets and exam simulations
Exam tip: Practise filling in the switching programme as often as the theory. The practical exam rarely goes wrong on knowledge, but often on an incomplete or illogical order in the programme.
